Goldfish with the Most Spawnings

Dr. Yu Peng, a member of Academician GuiJianfang's research team at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, successfully bred a black oranda goldfish with pleated-skirt tails in an 80cm×60cm×60cm aquarium located in Laboratory 708, Building 3 of the same institute. Over a period of 215 days from June 15, 2019 to January 11, 2020, this specimen laid a total of 42 consecutive eggs with an average spawning interval of 5.2 ± 2.0 days and an average fecundity of approximately 8,900 ± 3,300 eggs per spawning event. Audited by Forbes World Records, black oranda goldfish with pleated-skirt tails holds the title for goldfish with the most spawnings.

 

Goldfish is also called golden carp. Carp fish evolving from the wild red and yellow carp. Goldfish originated in China, one of three famous ornamental fishes in the world, has a history of more than 1700 years. Its body color has many colors such as red, yellow, blue, purple, black, white, two colors, three colors, five colors etc. and its body shape has a lion head, high head, bubble, dragon's eye, pompom, pearl scale, butterfly tail, tiger first etc. Among them, pleated-skirt tail is more ornamental and widely loved because its tail is as elegant and layered as the skirt of a young girl.

 

Goldfish spawn in spring and fall, laying 1-5 eggs at a time. Most goldfish spawn only in the spring, and spawn about two times a year. Multiple spawning can be achieved in the laboratory with temperature control, but a fish often spawns no more than five times a year. The price of brood fish is high. It takes tens of thousands of yuan for farms to introduce brood fish every year, and the purchased brood fish may not be able to spawn effectively. When they are studying goldfish in the laboratory, the experiment period is often long because the eggs cannot be obtained in time.

 

Dr. Yu Peng of the Institute of Hydrology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, who has a lot of experience in aquaculture and reproduction, said that he also experienced mass extinction in the early process of breeding goldfish. Start again and again, study hard and actively visit and consult friends who know a lot about fish so that he finally solved various problems in goldfish farming. Later, he successfully made a black oranda goldfish with pleated-skirt tails spawn 42 times in 215 days, creating the world record for goldfish with the most spawnings.

 

Unfortunately, Dr. Yu Peng's black oranda goldfish with pleated-skirt tails did not survive during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. At present, Dr. Yu Peng quickly raised a group of goldfish as parents, and they all laid more than 30 eggs. We expect it to break its own record and create an even more impressive number of eggs.
